How to Use This Book:
The reading section of the lesson can be used with, before, or after the introduction of new vocabulary and verbs. I prefer to do the reading exercises after introducing the new material, as it helps the students engage more in the reading, and they can refer to notes in order to identify the new verbs and vocabulary. Here are a few ways to accomplish this:
• Ask students to think about the picture that you need to insert through Clip Art or you can even have the students draw a picture to depict the paragraph. Ask the students, what is inferred from the picture/s? How does the picture/s relate to the present topic?
• Next, have individual students to read one sentence. After the paragraph has been read by a few of them, ask other students if they can recognize the verbs and vocabulary related to the previous or present topic.
• Afterwards, give students the task of writing a paragraph like the one they have just read, using the vocabulary and verbs that pertain to a specific topic of study. These paragraphs are not perfect, but they will provide students with ideas in cooperating vocabulary and grammar concepts.
• Finally, require the students to translate the paragraph so that they are able to see the connections between the first and second language.
Another option is to have the students engage in paired reading. The students will take turns reading a sentence, analyzing the grammar and vocabulary they have just read after each sentence.
