Reading workshop is a wonderful way to foster competent, joyful readers. Indpendent reading time gives students the opportunity to practice their growing reading skills while enjoying quality literature that they have chosen to read. But, independent reading time can pose problems for teachers. How do we know our students are using the skills that they need to become more proficient readers? Enter Reading Workshop Bookmarks and Graphic Organizers.

This product includes 10 bookmarks and 10 corresponding graphic organizers. Six of the bookmarks are genre focused, one is open response (the teacher prompts students to respond), one is focused on guided response, one is focused on using reading strategies intentionally and the last asks students to compare and contrast two different texts. The teacher can assign a certain bookmark for that week, or students can pick the bookmark according to the genre they are reading at the time.

The purpose of these bookmarks and graphic organizers is to prompt students to think about what they read as they read and thereby guide them into deeper understanding. The bookmarks and graphic organizers ask students to record the same information, but the graphic organizers allow more space to do so.

In my own classroom I have used these materials as a way to link independent reading time and our daily read aloud. After the read aloud, students and I fill out one section of the bookmark/graphic organizer together over the book we have just read. Then students fill out the same section over their book during their independent reading time. This provides practice and assessment over what you have been learning as a class. I have also provided samples of completed bookmarks. Students may benefit from seeing a completed bookmark.
