I constantly see teachers ask how to assess students in Reading Workshop. They wonder how to give a grade and how to determine if a student "got" the teaching points. Well, in addition to a blog post I wrote about this topic, I've created a template for you to use to build your own assessment.
First, you'd find a short story that fits into the genre of the unit completed. Using websites like CommonLit and Readworks, one can easily find great short stories to use.
From there, you copy and paste the story to this template for students to highlight. Using the digital sticky notes provided in the template, you create sentence starters based on the teaching points from the unit.
Students then have to highlight the text based on the teaching points. They highlight the lines in a color that matches the sticky they are focusing on. Then, they complete the sentence starter to explain how the line they chose represents the teaching point!
I've made and used a few of these for Lucy Calkins' units and it really shows if students have been paying attention throughout the units! Click here to see those assessments.
**** Please note there are no short stories included in this product. There are also no teaching points included. This is simply a template to build your own. If you want a pre-created one, see the link I posted above. ***
