Finding a Just-Right Library Book in Middle School -- The Best Authors
Going to the library in middle school is often frustrating, because your weakest readers often can’t find a book they like. This handout has four pages describing more than three dozen of the most prolific and popular middle school authors organized by genre and also alphabetically. It gives a brief description of each author’s output, and lists several of his or her most popular titles.
Does the student like scary stories – or sports stories – or books about animals –or thrilling fantasy -or life-and-death adventures – or realistic teen fiction? I have used this list extensively with my own students for several years. I update it every year.
This handout tells students where to look for authors who have written many books in these and more categories. Each author listed will have many titles in most junior high libraries, and all are appropriate for middle school readers. This updated, organized handout is easy to run off “as-is” to give your kids before the next library day. It’s also handy if you’re looking for ideas to stock your own classroom library.
Perfect for those running Reading Workshop in their classrooms, aligned with Common Core standards for Literacy.
