After reading workshop, I always have my students reflect on what kind of readers they were today. Were they distracted at times? Were they super focused? Did they use strategies to solve tricky words? Each day we write down the minutes we read and self reflect on if we read okay, strong, or superhero on our reflection sheets.
At the end of the week on Friday we complete the back page where we write down one thing we are proud of as readers this week (we read more than one book, we didn't get distracted, we moved up a reading level, etc.) and we write down a reading goal we have for next week (read like a superhero, read without getting distracted, read more than 5 books, etc.)
Self reflection as readers holds each student accountable for their reading time. I've noticed that even in first grade my students are able to assess how well they read and plan a goal to improve for next week!
