During silent reading time in your classroom, do you have students who spend most of their time wandering the classroom library “shopping” for books? Or do you have a few students who just can’t seem to settle down? Most classrooms also have a handful of pretend readers as well: those students who appear to be reading, but actually aren’t.
As last school year drew to a close I decided to spend the summer doing something about these behaviors in my own classroom. I scoured hundreds of pages of research and I found that, as I had previously believed, providing time for students to read self-chosen texts independently to be very important. However, I also learned that isn’t enough by itself. Students must be supported in their independent reading efforts.
