During silent reading time in your classroom, do you have students who spend most of their time wandering the classroom library “shopping” for books? Or do you have a few students who just can’t seem to settle down? Most classrooms also have a handful of pretend readers as well: those students who appear to be reading, but actually aren’t. And sometimes our students are truly engaged, but read the same genre over and over. Sound familiar?
As last school year drew to a close I decided to spend the summer doing something about these behaviors in my own classroom. I scoured hundreds of pages of research and I found that, as I had previously believed, providing time for students to read self-chosen texts independently to be very important. However, I also learned that isn’t enough by itself. Students must be supported in their independent reading efforts.
