This Reading and Writing Activity Pack contains lesson plans and activities for use with Mississippi Morning, a picture book by Ruth Vander Zee and Keep the Night Watch, a book of poems by Hope Anita Smith.

Mississippi Morning is a story set in the 1930s in Mississippi and describes a young boy's change of opinion when he learns about the mistreatment of blacks and the Ku Klux Klan.
Keep the Night Watch is a book of poems that chronicle a young boy's feelings towards his father.

Students will summarize, find text evidence to support character education, compare and contrast a story with poetry, and look at author's purpose.
A companion worksheet of comprehension for Mississippi Morning is also included.

These activities are a perfect companion to:
Character Education,
Black History Month,
Post CIvil War Unit,
Test prep where students will need to read two different types of pieces, analyze and compare/contrast through writing.
