a. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

Objective/Learning Target:
1. The student will be able to comprehend story structure, sequence of events, and cause and effect relationships in a text.

2. The student will be able to determine the meaning of an unknown word or phrase by looking at how it is used in the sentence.

Essential Questions:
How does the text structure help me understand the text?
Does the order of events matter in what outcome occurs?
How does a person’s decisions and actions change his or her life?
How can I figure out the meaning of a word I haven’t been taught?

Materials Needed: Make sure you have these materials ready:
Make one copy of “‘I’m Going to Change the World!’ The Story of Voltaire ~ Part 1” for each student.

Time Required: 30-60 minutes, depending on your student’s or child’s reading abilities.

Recommended Grade Range:
K-5: K-3 Enrichment; 4 On Level; 5 Reteaching
