How To Use This Resource

The resource will contain up to 100 reading passages. There will be 50 titles in all. Each topic will have a fiction or nonfiction passage paired with a reading comprehension section as well as a math problem directly from the passage. The passages are released monthly relating to different themes, holidays, or events that take place each month. Each new set of passages will be released at least on week prior until the bundle is complete.

Dates each month will be released (tentative):

  • October: Complete
  • November: Complete
  • December: Complete
  • January: December 20th
  • February: January 20th
  • March: February 20th
  • April: March 20th
  • May: April 20th
  • June: May 20th
  • September: August 20th

All of the reading passages come with reading comprehension questions and math questions that go along with the third-fifth grade Common Core Standards. At least two standards are addressed in each passage. Due to the mixed grade level sheets, the math standards does not necessarily match up to a standard, but there will be a topic specific grade appropriate topic covered. You can see each standard/ math topic covered for each sheet on the table of contents pages for each month.

The students will be asked to read the passage and then answer the questions using RACE for the reading questions and CUBES for the mathematical questions. The students may use the bookmarks or cheat sheets to assist them when answering the questions.

Students should be encouraged to “mark up” the reading portion of the activity. Circling or underlining helpful information is a great skill for students to practice.

These are great activities for morning work, early finishers, homework, or center work.

Differentiation

The passages are meant to look similar so you can differentiate for students without anyone feeling left out or upset for working on a different passage as their classmates. For example, if students are working on reading rotations, the third/ fourth grade passages would be great to give to your kids who may be approaching mastery and the fifth/ fourth grade version would be great to give to the students who have mastered a specific skill.

Reading Passage Topics Include:

Trick or Treat

Haunted House

Falling Leaves

The Missing Ingredient

The Jack O’ Lantern

Thankful

Traditions

Football Friends

The Great One

The Animal Shelter

The Best Gift

Snowflakes

Kwanzaa

Hanukkah

Winter Wonderland

These will also be divided up into just the fourth/ fifth and third fourth version if you do not wish to purchase all of the sheets.
