Reading and Phonics Help for Struggling 1st Graders Part 3 CVVC/CVCe Activities
Broadly, Reading and Phonics Help for Struggling 1st Graders (a three-part series by Phonics Advantage and Lavinia Pop) is designed to help students gain phonics and decoding skills in the quickest (and fun) way possible. Specifically, the approach is tailored to the struggling readers in the lowest reading groups who also have poor small-motor coordination. (Standard phonics methods that emphasize writing often have little benefit for these students compared to the physical time required to complete assignments.)
Part 3 in this phonics series focuses on long-vowel phonograms (Vvc and Silent E) and R-controlled phonograms. Part 3 also includes practice pages for choosing when to pronounce the hard and soft sound of “c”. Part 3 uses Mystery Words (word family riddles) to review the Vcc phonograms from Part 2 and reinforce Vvc word families in Part 3.
Most activities are designed to require just one to three minutes to: 1) allow many phonics concepts to be reviewed during one session, 2) hold the student’s interest through variety, 3) provide a mixture of “dry” and “fun” assignments, and 4) allow many phonics concepts to be repeated from session to session enabling the formation of long-term memory.
Tutoring for Lower Reading Groups
The six units can be presented in a school setting (individual or small group) by a teacher, support staff or parent volunteer. Pages can be sent home for further review to encourage development of long-term memory through repetition. (Parent support letter included for each unit.)
Mainstream/Full Class Use
Many activities can be enjoyed by the entire class. A separate file contains recording sheets to use at language centers. Hands-on activities that use letter tiles and Magic Hand (Silent E) have recording sheets. Most poems can be found in the supplemental file in foldable booklet format with cute clip-art. The supplemental file also contains large bingo and lotto call cards and class sets of bingo and lotto player cards. The stories in Part 3 come with comprehension questions and can be used as homework assignments.
Each of the six units focuses on four Cvvc word families and four R-controlled word families. You can find phonics poems, stories, flipbooks, Vowel Substitution worksheets, listening activities and word-tile activities to add variety and fun to your spelling units.
Happy Teaching :)
