This activity centers around the CVC spelling pattern. It can be used in multiple ways, but is used in my classroom for the Reading Around the Room and Writing Around the Room literacy centers. On a given day, there are typically 3-4 students who are at this center at a time.
The packet includes:
*a printable page for short vowel wands
*cut-out words to hang around the room
*a worksheet for students to complete
*instructions for the teacher
Students will take a wand with each vowel (so each student will have 5 wands). For reading around the room, students will hold the vowel in the missing space to create words. They are responsible for using the correct vowel sound and determining if the word is real or nonsense.
For writing around the room, students will hold the vowel in the missing space to create words. When they have created a real word, they will fill in the missing letter on their worksheet. They will then take a few seconds to draw a quick sketch of their word in order to demonstrate their comprehension and understanding of the word that he/she wrote down and read.
This activity is great because students can visit this station more than once. These words typically stay hanging for 2-3 weeks, and students just grab the same worksheet to continue working at this center. They really enjoy it because it feels like a scavenger hunt, and who doesn't love scavenger hunts?!
**It would work well if you also have popsicle sticks or straws to create your wands.
To differentiate, you may want to check out my other product "Reading and Writing Around the Room CVCe" for students at a more advanced Long-Vowel Pattern spelling stage.
*The worksheets can work as an assessment to hold students accountable for what they completed independently at their centers.
