This activity centers around the CVCe spelling pattern. It can be used in multiple ways, but is used in my classroom for the Reading Around the Room and Writing Around the Room literacy centers. On a given day, there are typically 3-4 students who are at this center at a time.
The packet includes:
*a printable page for magic "e" wands
*cut-out words to hang around the room
*a worksheet for students to complete
*instructions for the teacher
Students will each take a magic "e" wand. For reading around the room, students will hold the magic "e" in the missing space to convert short-vowel words into long-vowel words. They are responsible for determining the difference between the short-vowel word and the long-vowel word.
For writing around the room, students will hold the magic "e" wand in the missing space to create new words. Students will use their worksheets to draw a picture of the original short-vowel (CVC) word, and the new long-vowel (CVCe) word.
This activity is great because students can visit this station more than once. These words typically stay hanging for 2-3 weeks, and students just grab the same worksheet to continue working at this center. They really enjoy it because it feels like a scavenger hunt, and who doesn't love scavenger hunts?!
**It would work well if you also have popsicle sticks or straws to create your wands.

*The worksheets can work as an assessment to hold students accountable for what they completed independently at their centers.
