This is a simplified version of a Daily 5 choice board that I created for our 1st grade team. During Daily 5, students can choose from 8 activities that fit the five categories of daily 5.
Vocabulary - Students complete a vocabulary activity. Our 1st grade teachers use the words from their Houghton Mifflin series. Students write the word and definition on one side and draw a picture on the other side. As they progress through the year the students will label their picture and eventually add a sentence using the word.
Read to Self - Students find a quiet spot and read a book from their book box.
Fluency Folder - Students find a partner and read their fluency stories to each other. This is the read to someone choice. Students will need to find two different partners to complete this box.
Writing - Our first grade teachers give their students several options for writing. There is a wonder table set up with paper. A few students can sit at the wonder table and write about the objects on the wonder table. A set of ten journals in the writing section. Students can write in the journals about the topic provided or students can write a free choice story in their notebook. Once bucket filler notes are introduced, students can also write those to one another.
Spelling - Our 1st grade teachers have students quiz each other on their list of spelling words. There is a signature space to show who their partner was. There are several ways to practice spelling and the signature space could be adapted if you do not have them quizzing each other. For example, if you do rainbow write, once a student finishes they can have another student look at them to make sure they are spelled correctly and then the student would sign their choice board.
Poem - This is our listen to reading station. Students listen to the poem and then copy it on a piece of paper. Students must then find two friends that they read the poem to.
Book Shopping - Students are allowed to trade out the books in their book boxes once a week. When picking a new book, students need to do the five finger test to determine if it is a good fit book.
Phonics - This is a chance for students to practice their phonics skill for the week. Usually the activity is a read and write the room in our 1st grade classrooms, but any phonics activity could be used here.
The middle box is a free choice. Students can complete any of the activities a second time or other reading and writing activities that you have set up in your classroom.
The categories on this choice board fit the Daily 5 components, but are generic so they can be adapted to meet the needs and teaching styles of other classrooms.
The pictures are included to help Kindergarten and early 1st grade students remember what the eight choices are. The lines on spelling, poem and fluency folder are signature spaces. Our 1st grade teachers teach students how to write their initials and then have them sign each others choice boards to show they were partners and completed the activity together.
