Reading for theme: Students will learn to discover the THEME of ANY novel, short story, narrative poem, or a picture book. This set of 3 theme handouts will reinforce the way that CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT and PLOT work together to create a THEME. Students will choose and follow one character throughout an entire text. Character traits will be noted and compared from beginning to end, and plot elements will be recorded. By the end of the activity, students will create a final project that reveals a theme that the character's experiences reveal.
This product can be used with independent reading texts or with small group/partner texts. Students reading the same book can follow different characters to see how different themes are developed within the same text.
