Here is a valuable product for Reading in the Content Area of Science. It can be used for your science study of animals, birds, or the food chain. It also gives students lots of practice in reading comprehension and vocabulary skills.
The focus of "Brown Pelicans Dive for Dinner" is on how brown pelicans dive into water to capture prey. After catching the prey and a lot of water, they tip their bills to drain the water out before swallowing their meal. This hunting method is called plunge diving, and brown pelicans are quite skilled at it! It was one of the most interesting topics that I have ever researched.
Twelve multiple choice questions follow the informational text which comes with a cool clip art photo of a brown pelican. (It’s a color photo although it shows up black-and-white on my tiff preview.) Vocabulary, presented in the lesson and assessed, includes: soar, plunge divers, carnivores, lagoon, piers, marinas, and flock. Reading comprehension skills assessed are: making inferences, drawing conclusions, identifying details, and relating causes and effects. An answer key is included. As a bonus I have provided a link to a video that shows a brown pelican diving and catching a fish. This product is a word document that you can readily edit if necessary.
