In a world history course, it is difficult to find resources that cover the breadth of the curriculum in a way that is student friendly while also promoting higher order thinking. "As the World Turns" is a series of readings that provides the 10,000 foot view of history of the entire world, going time-period by time period, region by region. The goal of the reading is to weave the major trends and threads of world history, while directing students to important people, events and movements. The goal is to give students a basic framework of the era from which to launch into "deeper discovery"
"As the World Turns" then asks students to create two charts: a +/- chart and an "Impact Chart." The +/- chart allows students to ponder what each region of the world did well and what did not go so well.
The Impact Chart requires the students to evaluate each area on the level of impact the people in that region had on the world culturally, militarily, and/or economically. The students make an evaluation of the region at the beginning of the era and then the end of the era. By the end of the activity, students will have a neat, easy to read graph of which areas grew and shrunk in impact and influence during the time period, while also having the names, events and movements to explain why it grew or shrank in influence.
Once completed, students will have a solid framework of the eras' historiography, allowing the teacher to delve deeper into important concepts or trends without having to worry about the students grasping the chronology.
The readings are broken up into three files, broken down by region for easier comprehension.
