This unit is designed to support the classroom use of the book Cheechako. In the unit, the story is broken into six reading assignments that focus on story structure, new vocabulary, and reading for understanding. Each assignment has pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities. In addition, multi-disciplinary activities are suggested to support the unit and build on the story across the curriculum. Cheechako, by Jonathan Thomas Stratman, is about a young boy’s struggles to adjust after moving to Alaska. It’s ideal for use with students in grades 4 through 7, depending on their reading abilities. It is emotion packed, filled with real life experiences, and includes some amazing adventures.
