This month-long unit is intended for the primary grades, 1-3.
I designed this for my first grade enrichment reading group. They read the text in small group, while focusing on fluency and comprehension. We discussed how the author, Abby Klein, uses descriptive language, dialogue, and suspense to tell her story. As we worked through the text, they applied Abby Klein’s story structure to their own fiction stories. It was a great way to link reading and writing and finish a quality piece.
This file includes comprehension questions and reflections for each of the 8 chapters, as well as writing planning pages for brainstorming, beginning, middle, and end for student narratives. Sugggested month long plan and answer key included.
Print and assemble reading and writing pages in a booklet for your students or distribute day by day as needed. Students can use their own writing paper or technology to publish their writing.
My students loved this unit and their stories were fantastic.
