This 2nd grade lesson bundle (with assessment for “Disaster Alert”) goes along with Ready Gen 2016 book “Disaster Alert!” It does not follow the lessons in the teacher's guide, but takes some aspects from many of the lessons. The lesson plans are written following the CLI lesson template for shared reading to follow a Balanced Literacy approach. I have created shared reading activities for three of the shared reading lessons.
You will need your own copy of the supporting text "Super Storms" by Seymour Simon. However, another book about weather disasters would also work. In addition, for the shared reading lesson 6, you will need to have access (perhaps in your classroom library) to texts that are also about weather disasters. This lesson involves having students compare similar topics across texts.
As for the assessment, I have included the Common Core Standards that are assessed (PA state specific as well). I grade the open-ended responses using a rubric that is included for each question. The students can also see the rubric so they can check their own work for correctness.
When you see "Reading Response Journal" written in the lesson plans, I am simply referring to a notebook that the students use only for responses.
Other Units to support this one: (not necessary for any lessons in "Disaster Alert!")
Shared lesson 1 refers to our "Change Makers" unit in that the students need knowledge of images (text features). You could easily use another text or even eliminate this part of the lesson. If you're interested, below is the link to the "Change Makers" Unit that we did.
Finally, I have also included a link to the interactive read aloud that I did before beginning shared reading each day. The book is "The Earth Dragon Awakes" and is also a part of Ready Gen 2016.
All files included are Microsoft Word files and compressed to a ZIP folder.
