Product Description
Students create their own avatar online and write a reflection piece to accompany the reading of the novel Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

We have done this project 3 years in a row and changed our delivery each time. This is what we've learned:
-Year 1 we assigned it as a homework/vacation assignment. It was very difficult for students to share with us, there were a lot of trouble shooting issues. We also did not get great products.
-Year 2 we did this in school in the computer lab as a pre-reading activity. Again, not the best results because the students hadn't started reading yet and they didn't quite understand the connection or the theme of identity.
-Year 3 we read about 7-8 chapters and then did this assignment in school in the computer lab. We had been talking it up throughout the first few chapters and we got the BEST results out of any 3 years.

We have 90 minute blocks and this took the entire time. Some kids finished early and there is a bonus assignment at the end. They were able to print all avatars in color and type and print their reflections. Only 2-3 students did not finish in the 90 minute block and they were required to finish the writing portion for homework.

We cut out all avatars and create our own classroom OASIS on a wall in our classroom. Students must also create an avatar name and we create a Scoreboard with top participating avatars in each class on the scoreboard. Because of all of these things, the buy-in for the book is remarkable!
