This lesson is suitable for students 5th grade + learning the grid method of drawing. It asks at the beginning of the handout to use the QR code on your iPad to watch a video about how to use the grid method: http://viewpure.com/Gsmjdx0ArVk?start=0&end=0 I did not make this video, but I liked it's length and clarity.
Next, it asks students to take a self-portrait and print it in black and white. If your kiddos do not have this capability, you can take and print the photo for them 8.5 x 11.
Thirdly, part of this lesson includes an 8.5 x 11" paper with 1" tick marks already printed around the edges. For me, this lesson was about getting the students to draw what they see...not ruler skills. The handout shows examples of completing the portrait with contour lines, shading, and even using patterns. I took these images off of the Internet and sadly, do not know where they came from. They are not mine, but are good examples.
Next, This lesson includes a grid paper with the 1" grid on it. I printed this on old overhead projector sheets for the kids to put their photos under.
Finally, this lesson comes with a rubric which includes assessment on following directions, creativity, using tools correctly, visual and organizational elements & principles, and effort & behavior.
