Do you feel like you're just talking at your students during your ReadyGen lesson? I wanted to create a concept board packet that would allow me to differentiate instruction for my higher group to work as a small group independently. With a wide range of readers in grade 1, I keep my lower and middle students with me on the carpet displaying this document on the Smartboard using Microsoft Word while the hard copy of this packet will be used for my high group. Each of the 13 lessons are on single pages with the Enduring understanding, Essential questions, Vocabulary, Close reading questions, Team talk, Reading/Language analysis, and coordinating book and journal pages all typed up for students to follow. I distribute the anchor text and/or supporting text as needed, go over the directions with my small group and they are ready to work on their own. This packet allows students the opportunity to work cooperatively, read directions, process and think about discussion questions visually, and move on to other teacher assigned activities when finished. This was a way for me to simplify the lengthy teacher's guide and refer to the pertinent information already in this packet using a simple notation in my teacher plan book rather than filling out the small boxes year after year. The top third of my 28 students are placed in the group based on their high reading levels and they enjoy working at their own pace without waiting for everyone else in the class to catch up. Parents are happy to know that the needs of their advanced child is being met as well. Administrators see that instruction is differentiated during observations and visits to the classroom. This packet contains vocabulary words and student directions for lessons 1 to 13 for Unit 4A. I cut the headers and vocabulary words and used clear packing tape to secure them onto colorful index cards for students to interact with the words using student-generated pictures, synonyms, sentences, and definitions. The packet is centered on the display board and the vocabulary words are displayed on both sides. I hope you find it useful! I will use this year after year. Please adjust the margins as needed when your document is saved and ready for printing. I used a 0.5 margin all around to keep lessons to 1 page to make it easier for student viewing and displaying onto the concept board. ***A NEW addition to this packet is that the Enduring Understanding is written in an "I CAN..." statement for students to easily understand what they are learning. Also, there is an additional Team talk question option for your higher third. Finally, there is a second option for the writing to increase the rigor for your higher third. Edit as needed to suit the specific needs of your learners. Highlight to color-code vocabulary words to show differentiation if desired.
