Since the children have to practice dialogue and my students have a difficult time with that concept, I have Nell and Drake with speech bubbles.
First they will write what Nell says and Drake's response (or vice versa). I even have a few children will get a 4 of them to have a conversation.
Then the children will practice taking the speech bubbles, putting quotation marks around it and writing "said Nell" on sentence strips. You can have one child act as Nell and another as Drake depending on your learners needs.
Then I am using the "Said is Dead" chart to have them upgrade their vocabulary with words such as "exclaimed".
This accommodation worked well for my 12:1:1 class.
