What would you do in these real coaching scenarios for the best possible outcome? This document contains 14 coaching scenarios that are very relatable to anyone who has ever coached in the K-12 arena. These can be used to train coaches, hone an individual's coaching skills, or to help prepare educators who wish to become instructional coaches.
Example Scenarios from the Document:
5. The assistant principal gives you an "administrative team" shirt and asks you to wear it at all staff meetings. Furthermore, she says you will sit with the administrators during all staff meetings. What will you say to her?
12. A teacher shares that he believes all of the students in his third period students are all beyond help. He says he has given up on them and invites you to teach the class instead of him going through the "motions" of it by giving them worksheets to keep them quiet. What do you say to the teacher?
14. During every Reading Leadership Team meeting, one teacher continues to be the naysayer. She will tell the entire group that the ideas will not work, that nothing worked in the past, and that the parents of the school do not care and will not show up to events (to give a few examples). You also know that this teacher applied for your position at the school. What can you say? Do you talk to her individually? Do you address these comments during the meetings?
These coaching scenarios were created for a district-level professional development series on instructional coaching that won a state FASD award for a Florida school district.
