Real life debate and real life research: Engage your students with the controversy over the re-release of "Do They Know It's Christmas".
Many see the song as one that stereotypes and misinforms. Yes, it is raising a pile of money—as its predecessor did—but some believe it is, ironically, just a band aid, nothing more.
The release of this song has raised excellent questions—ones that are perfect for your students to debate. Let them explore both sides of the story and explore their thoughts and feelings on the issue.
Students will view videos and then read several articles on both sides of the controversy (links provided). They will be expected to take notes on information that supports either side. Then, after a full class discussion of their research, you can have an informal, full class debate. They will then write a letter to the editor to express their views. Finally, if you would like to extend this topic, students can work together to do a real-life project where they promote a cause of their choice.
