This interactive activity addresses both standards in the 8th grade Number System domain (8.NS.1 and 8.NS.2) The tasks challenge students to engage in DOK 3-4 levels of thinking as they develop rational and irrational numbers that best fit specific values on a number line.
The three sections on each sheet are:
PLACE IT- Students glue (or write) their given numbers where they belong along the first number line. Students are also asked to create a color key and shade rational and irrational numbers different colors.
CREATE IT- Students develop their own real numbers that can be located at the approximate points given on the second number line. Each activity sheets prompts students to meet certain specification for their numbers.
EXPLAIN IT- Students respond to a question using their knowledge and vocabulary acquired throughout the unit.
The six different activity sheets increase in difficulty to accommodate both struggling and advanced learners. Each sheet holds individual sets of values and a different open response question. This makes it a great activity to rotate around the classroom and have students complete peer reviews on challenges they did not have to solve firsthand.
The visual, colorful appeal and diversity of the different activity sheets make it a great culmination of work to display in the classroom or hallway of any school!
