WARNING: This activity is only for SLPs and students who want to have loads of fun in therapy! This game is your “catch all” solution for mixed groups, but it’s also great for individual therapy, articulation groups, fluency groups, and language groups.
FOR ARTICULATION THERAPY: Use the carrier phrases and articulation cards to practice producing the later developing sounds in connected speech! This game is for readers and targets the phonemes /r/, vocalic r, vocalic r variations, /s/, /z/, /l/, /f/, /v/, sh, ch, j, and th as well as /r/ blends, /s/ blends and /l/ blends. Create decks for articulation therapy.
TO PREP: Laminate pages for durability. Print and cut out all cards. If you plan to use this for artic therapy, create “decks” for each sound and either paper clip them together or group them together in a plastic zipper bag. Each card is marked in the top left corner according to the sound it targets for sorting purposes. For all other therapy, feel free to mix up all the picture cards. Also, print page 5 (which contains 2 game mats) as many times as needed so that you have 1 mat per student (so print enough to accommodate your largest group).
This 26 page download includes:
- Real or Ridiculous game mats (2 per page, print enough to give 1 to each student in your group). There is no limit to how many students can play.
- 5 pages of carrier phrases (100 cards in all)
- Directions for using this game for articulation groups, mixed groups, or individual therapy (download the preview to read these and get a closer look).
- 20 articulation cards per phoneme (15 pages totaling 300 articulation cards in all!).
These picture cards will also be used for fluency and language therapy. Use these with other activities as you would any artic cards!
Tip: Print 2 copies to use for Go Fish or Memory, too!
The SLP gets to “take” the RIDICULOUS cards while the students keeps the REAL cards (or vice versa). Whoever has the most cards at the end of the session WINS THE GAME! Giggle and have fun with these. Let them lead to wild conversations. Happy, motivated students try harder and effort yields results!
Suggestions for using this for speech homework are also included.
This activity is guaranteed to make your students beg for more. If you like "REAL or RIDICULOUS," check out the Christmas version HERE.
