PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Challenge stigma with science? Validate abstract student experience with concrete facts? Check and check! This CBT inspired school counseling lesson challenges automatic negative thoughts about mental illness and encourages flexible thinking about mental health. Suicide is an important emotional health topic in schools. As school counselors it is our job to grow student knowledge about emotional health in helpful, healing, empowering ways. This lesson incorporates a difficult conversation in possibly the most approachable way possible, so your students don't feel trapped or blindsided into it.

In this neurobiology based lesson, every student gets a brain handout, 6 neurons (2 each for dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine), and 10 random neurotransmitters from a selection of domaine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Students learn about how brains develop, the role of each neurotransmitter, the role of neurons, and have an opportunity to color their brain handouts and glue the neurons and neurotransmitters to them. With counselor help students consider what the ratios of neurotransmitters they received for the lesson might look like. What happens if there's no (or 1) dopamine in the 10? Etc. Students then consider healthy vs. unhealthy ways to cope/deal with tough times, and learn skills to reach out to friends who might be struggling. Students learn skills to ask for help for themselves or friends. A question or answer session ends the lesson, with an optional (but highly recommended) closing discussion afterwards.

Please note this lesson has some instructional materials in common with my "Biology of Emotional Health" classroom lesson. Differences: in this lesson students do not build their own wearable brain model or learn about the parts of the brain. This lesson includes (or can include, you can remove this part) conversation on SI and suicide. This lesson has question cards for an anonymous question/answer session. This lesson includes an activity where students receive 10 random neurotransmitters and learn what the combination they receive might mean in regards to emotional health.

This is one of my favorite lessons. It is in my go-to grab bag, especially for emotional health awareness. When I use it, it is effective, meaningful, and I see it make a difference. Maybe it will be useful for you, too.
