I teach students that need to own their learning to retain it. Instead of spelling lists I use Vocabulary entry sheets. These sheets are kept in a binder that is alphabetized and update for as long as they are my student. Some students build a large book over the 3 years with me. The entry contains looking up the definition, coloring a picture, finding a picture, writing the word 3-5 times each, constructing sentences, and typing them.
Pages should be copied double sided. I select words from their reading class or their ICS classes (Science/Social Studies).
As spelling fades away with supportive devices it is still important that we build our students vocabularies.
