I've often asked myself, "How effective are grammar worksheet that focus in on one error?" I don't think they are very useful because they don't use any meaningful or real-world writing. When we ask our students to proofread their work, it isn't a worksheet, but a piece of writing in which many errors can be present.
This five-page document uses the well-known Cinderella story to present a real-world text to students. Students read and must locate the twenty-five grammatical errors in the short story and make the necessary grammatical corrections. The errors are "hidden" within the text, and the students must try to locate all twenty-five. The accompanying Answer Key locates all twenty-five errors, making it an easy marking or discussion exercise for teachers.
I usually use this with my Grade 8 and 9 students. We do a timed drill, to see who get get it done correctly first. I have also used it as a group activity, quiz, or diagnostic to see where my seniors are at in terms of their writing, editing, and grammar skills.
