Students utilize number lines to gain a conceptual knowledge of solving real-world problems involving adding & subtracting integers. Students must also recognize words that indicate a positive or negative integers, such as "below ground level" or "descend." Additionally, students may practice writing expressions to represent real-world problems.
May be used prior to the instruction of adding & subtracting integers so that students have a visual understanding of why you must sometimes add with subtraction or subtract with the addition of integers.
I stress at the beginning of instruction with integers word problems for students to "SKETCH A NUMBER LINE" to assess the reasonableness of their answers or to understand why an expression they have written is not correct. This activity is a great introduction to utilizing number lines when adding and subtracting integers.
