I created this product to provide my students a real world situation where fraction skills would be applicable. There is a total of 14 problems for students to solve as they rotate through 7 different centers. Each center is self-contained, so it doesn’t matter which center a student starts at.
Centers are themed around the preparations for a family reunion party, and require students to “travel” to The Candy Shop, The Dollar Store, The Toy Store, The Bakery, The Grocery Store, The Butcher Shop and then back to Home Sweet Home. At each location, students must apply their knowledge and understanding of fractions – fractions of a set/number and simplifying fractions – in order to complete calculations. Some centers require students to calculate costs, which is a great review of operations with decimals. These centers also provide opportunity for students to challenge their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• 7 location posters (The Candy Shop, The Dollar Store, The Toy
Store, The Bakery, The Butcher Shop, Home Sweet Home)
• 14 problem cards, 2 for each location
• Answer Key
Simply print, cut and laminate problem cards and location posters. Post the location posters around the room with the problem cards, and ask your students to bring paper and pencil with them as they journey through town to prepare for a family reunion!
