Teachers need to make math relevant and meaningful to their students. This packet focuses on real-world math stories and word problems and can be used in a number of ways. You could use the two powerpoints as whole group instructional guides and have the students solve as you discuss the story. Or you could use the first powerpoint as an example at the beginning of the year, have students create their own story, then repeat with the second powerpoint at the end of the year to show growth in both math knowledge and writing skills. This packet includes:
- Two powerpoints with two different stories containing word problems and strategies for solving the problems
- Instructions Sheet for guiding students to create their own real-world math stories
This packet is an excellent way to combine language arts and math skills in the classroom. You can adjust the names of the characters and settings to better incorporate your own personal school and students. Skills addressed within the stories include but are not limited to: fractions, subtraction, multiplication, division, making change, and interpreting graphs. You could also cover many language arts standards as well by discussing plot, setting, introduction, conclusion, main idea/ details, and transitions while you are going through the math stories.
