These 10 multi-step problems are based on “real world” mathematic scenarios. Included are problems, which require students to convert and compare different sized standard measurements (inches to feet, inches to yards, feet to yards, ounces to pounds, meters to cm). A number of the problems also require students to calculate the cost of items.
Problems print landscape with 2 problems on a page. They are designed to be cut in half to save on paper. An answer key is included.
These word problems support the following CCSS:
CCSS Math Content 4.MD.A.2 Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
CCSS Math Content 4.0A.A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
CCSS Math Content 5.MD.A.1 Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
