Build schema and comprehension with these real world phonics templates! These real life pictures allow students to make connections to the words they are being asked to decode. Many students can decode with ease, but may have no concept of what the words actually mean, which leads to a decline in comprehension. Not only is this crucial for second language learners, but also those students who “can read”, but struggle when it comes to discussion or answering questions about the text. This set of picture templates coincides with the order of the words are taught in the Wonders Reading 1st grade curriculum, but are great for any young learners and speakers, especially English Language Learners! The only words left off are action words and things that can be found in the classroom. As we all know, there’s nothing better than showing them something in person or having them act out the words themselves.
These picture templates can be used in a number of ways. You can use them before you do your phonics templates, so the students have the background knowledge to ensure success and comprehension (especially if you have a high number of ELL students). You can use them after the phonics template if you’d like your students to decode the words before they’ve seen the pictures. You can also go back and forth between templates, having the students decode the words on the phonics template until they get a word that they are unfamiliar. Then you can flip to the picture template to discuss that word. It all depends on your teaching style, the students you have from year to year and what their needs may be.
I have also included multiple pictures for any words that may have multiple meanings or different examples. This can be done whole class or just with students needing enrichment.
They can be used:
*during whole group discussion
*for repeated discussion and practice in small group instruction
*by a paraprofessional working with students
This set is complete with a teacher answer key, which is especially helpful for the multiple meaning words!!
