This activity can be used in small groups, individually, for math talk presentations or as a challenge problem. This real-world problem requires student to understand decimals and volume of rectangular prisms. Students must first make sense of the problem to see what is being asked and make a plan on how to find the final answer. There are multiple ways to arrive at the solution and it is exciting seeing the various and creative ways that students break apart and think about the problem. I have also allowed them to use linking cubes as a hand-on, visual modification.
