This is a 3 page assignment sheet for a tree drawing assignment. It has students practice drawing realistic trees, and then be create surreal or fantasy based trees.
Outlined in this handout are instructions for students broken down into steps, goals, grading criteria, marking rubric, and image examples.
This assignment can be paired with drawing lessons, painting lessons, shading, line, and the elements of design. I have done this assignment with grade 9 and 10 students, and have been happy with the final results, but it would also be suitable for middles school students. I decided to create this assignment because I was frustrated with students drawing really bad trees( the typical stump with a green cloud on the top) and I wanted students to learn to really look at and observe the shapes of trunk, branches, and leaves on different types of trees. This assignment helped to address some of those issues, and also let them experiment with materials and their creativity.
There are many examples of contemporary artists who use tree imagery creatively. I would typically pair this assignment with lessons on contemporary artists creating art with trees as a subject matter.
Depending on the length of classes, and the age of students, this project would probably take at least one week. For the final image I have made students work very large, which also increases the time length. You can change the size of the final image to accomodate for your class time.
