It begins with a colorful graphic organizer that asks your students to define nominal and real GDP, to identify the standard of living and real GDP per capita, and to list the factors that can contribute to varying real GDPs around the world. Next, students will apply what they've learned to calculate nominal and real GDPs using data provided for several countries around the world, and must conclude whether the countries experienced economic growth. Finally, students will use data provided to calculate real GDP per capita for several countries and conclude whether or not these countries experienced an increase in their standards of living.
This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
