One fun way to practice decoding is to apply phonics skills to nonsense words. Context clues or memorization won't help...applying phonics skills is the only way to decode them! This game encourages students to use their decoding skills and then to determine if words are real or nonsense.
Shuffle the cards and place them in a plastic jack-o-lantern. Have students draw one card at a time and read it. If it’s a nonsense word, it’s a trick and they put it in the trick pile. If it’s a real word and they can read it correctly, they get to keep it in their goody bag or treat word mat. Whomever has the most treats at the end wins.
