The very first lesson when introducing reader’s workshop for me is always…
Establishing the difference between REAL reading and FAKE reading.
It sounds silly, but we all have those fake reader bandits! I was even skeptical to teach the difference between real and fake reading to by upper grades students, but I quickly realized that the upper grades kids are probably fake reading pros by the time they get to me. To me, addressing this early and right off the bat establishes your expectations for reading in your classroom.
In this download, I share how I teach real vs. fake reading in my classroom - anchor chart , superb acting skills by me (ha!), and creating these cute little student bookmarks!
These bookmarks serve as a daily reminder during independent reading time how students SHOULD read when they're reading by themselves. Students can decorate them and make them really special. I love laminating these for durability for my students to use all year long!
