Unit: Your Day in School / Tu día en la escuela
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to respond to key questions using target vocabulary from the “Your Day in School” Unit from Realidades 1B. The questions in this activity are based on what students learn in their classes, what teachers teach their class, what their classes are like, what objects or materials are needed for different classes, and what activities students can do in a class.
Student Learning Objective: Yo voy a usar vocabulario nuevo sobre la escuela para escribir frases sobre mi día en la escuela en español.
Activity Set-Up: Print out station pages #1 - #5, tape on to construction paper, and place in different areas of the classroom. Because of my large class sizes, I created two rotations of stations to have more more opportunity movement, less crowding, and to be able to make smaller groups for each station.
Pre-Activity: Before students begin the station activity, I discuss each of the questions and the key vocabulary that will be used at each station. I present each question on the board, numbering them as I go, and ask students to take simple notes with me, emphasizing the question and key words. We discuss and create some example sentences as a class, both from Spanish to English, and English to Spanish.
Activity: Students can be grouped at stations with a timed rotation or may travel on their own through the classroom, your choice. The response sheet, included below, corresponds with each of the five stations. Students can use the models printed on the station instructions as a guide for how to form their sentences.
Students will create two or three Spanish sentences at each station that answer the target question, and will also write the sentences in English/ This will be a way for you to check their understanding. I encourage students to use the words provided on the charts in order use a variety of the vocabulary words in the unit. Some students may wish to include different words than are on the charts, and to satisfy this request is at your discretion.
Response Sheet: Included is a scaffolded version with sentence stems on the first line printed for each section (I find this the most helpful for all students to be successful), and a plain version without sentence stems.
*Grading Options: (1) You may use this as a classwork activity for practice. (2) You may wish to grade all of the sentences students create. (3) Or, you can do what I do, and once all students complete the work for every station, I ask them to star or highlight their best sentence from each of the five stations and that is the one I grade.
