PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Realistic Fiction Genre study contains daily lesson plans for a 16-day Realistic Fiction genre study and all applicable directions needed for the reader’s response journals.

The genre study presented here can be integrated into any type of reading program you use. It is perfect for reader’s workshop, small reading groups, reading buddies, and even whole class novels. This particular genre study is intended to be used with reading response journals. In this manner, direction pages should be displayed using an overhead, document camera, or smart board/projector. Students will transfer the information from the projected image into their own reader’s response journals.

This Realistic Fiction Genre Unit helps you teach your students the important literary aspects of Realistic fiction. The unit begins with a book selection survey to help your students pick the right book. The unit then proceeds to teach students the most important elements of Realistic Fiction: setting, character, and plot. Lessons included in this unit are:
*Book Survey
*Reading Log
*Realistic Fiction Notes
*Exposition
*Setting - Physical Descriptions
*Authentication of Setting
*Characterization - Physical Descriptions
*Connecting to the Character
*Characterization - Traits
*Character - Static v. Dynamic
*Authentication of Character
*Sequence of Events
*Internal v. External Conflict
*Comparing Conflict
*Connecting to the Conflict
*Evaluating Literature
*Assessment Rubric

Each lesson listed above includes:
*Pacing guide for the 16-day unit
*Teaching notes on the importance of each literary element as well as basic directions on how to use the application activity.
*Student Notes on each literary technique/element to be copied into the students’ reading response journals.
*Practical activity for students’ application of knowledge.
*Rubric for assessing students’ understanding of the literary elements of Realistic Fiction.

When helping students to set up their reader’s response journals it is ideal to start a new page for each day presented within the unit. This helps keep journals organized.

If you use the Reader’s Workshop model of teaching literature, it is preferred to conduct a Realistic Fiction read-aloud simultaneously to assist in teaching the elements of Realistic Fiction. In this manner, you will have examples to share and discuss with the students during a mini-lesson. Students are then able to find these literary elements independently using their own selected novel.
