This unit includes 20 mini-lessons, 20 sample anchor charts, 20 guided practice sheets (which are perfect for interactive notebooks), 15 versatile read alouds, independent reading prompts and a fun Emoji Accordion Book:
This unit is the first in a series, so the lessons (can be purchased separately)
lay a foundation for reading fiction in general, then reading realistic fiction in particular. For a list of the included lessons, see preview.
—Extended Lesson Plan: Includes lesson objective, Common Core Standards, a short mini-lesson script, a sample anchor chart, a reading focus, a listed lesson extension, and suggested read alouds.
—Lesson Cards: These cards are a shortened version of the extended lesson plan. They include the lesson, CC-Standards, sample anchor chart and suggested read alouds. Keep these on a metal ring in the whole group area for easy access.
Each lesson is accompanied by an extension which serves as guided practice. The extension sheets include:
—Information: a concise restatement of the mini-lesson content.
—Guided Practice: a place for the class (or guided reading group) to apply the skill to a shared reading.
—Independent Practice: a place for the student to apply the same skill to her own independent reading.
Format: These pages are small enough to be stored in reading notebooks as a reference. Perfect for interactive notebooks!
Daily Reading Focus
Also included is a powerpoint which can be used to project the daily “reading focus.” This is a prompt that asks students to apply the learned skill to their independent reading book. Reading bookmarks are included for this purpose.
Emoji Accordion Books
This bundle includes a smaller product—Two Emoji Accordion Books
. These are used as extensions to a few of the lessons. The two books include:
—Personal Response: Students express their personal response to their book in writing, then punctuate with emojis. Can be used with independent reading.
—Live-Texting the Plot: Students describe the plot, then punctuate with emojis. Can be used with independent reading.
The Read Alouds
Use authentic texts to teach reading! These read alouds (can be purchased separately)
are designed to meet a variety of instructional needs. Each one-page read aloud includes more discussion points than can possibly be covered so that the teacher may pick and choose which questions and “think-alouds” will best fit her students.
Each one-page read alouds contains the following sections:
—Book Info: Title, author, grade level
—Instructional Goals: A handful of instructional goals (and a corresponding CC-standard) are listed. Highlight the ones that fit your current needs.
—Text Introduction: A brief introduction to the text.
—During Reading Discussion: A few questions that can be asked during the reading to prompt student thinking. Each of these questions corresponds to one of the listed instructional goals and is labeled accordingly (see preview).
—Modeling/Think Aloud: A suggestion for when the teacher can pause and model good reading behaviors.
—After-reading discussion: Discussion questions to be asked after the discussion. Each of these questions corresponds to one of the listed instructional goals and is labeled accordingly (see preview).
—Extensions/Mini-Lessons: Ideas for mini-lessons that naturally extend the reading of the text. For each read aloud there is a corresponding mini-lesson included in extended and card format.
—Connections to Larger Units of Study: This section points out how the discussion connects to larger units of study in the reading classroom.
To Use: Highlight your instructional goals. Then highlight the questions and think-aloud that correspond to your goals. Request the book from your library—then you’re good to go!
This product contains 15 read alouds, one for each of 15 books. The books represent a variety of backgrounds, tones and challenges for the reader. All of them are engaging, high-quality, and can be read comfortably in a single setting. See the preview for specific titles.
