This PowerPoint will take your class step by step through a Realistic Fiction unit of study in reading and writing. The reading slides explain in detail the literary elements that make up a Realistic Fiction story, such as character, setting, theme, character change, and movement through time. The slides also include response to literature prompts and exemplars, as well as text based questions to engage your students to think more closely about Realistic Fiction. The second section of the PowerPoint teaches students how a writer develops their character. Your students will be prompted to develop the character's internal and external traits, as well as his/her likes and dislikes, habits, fears, and eating habits. This section will include exemplars, writing prompts, and partner prompts. The final slide will prompt your students to use all their ideas to create a Realistic Fiction story about their character. This is an awesome unit that has helped my students read like writers and write like readers of Realistic Fiction. I hope it will do the same for your students.
