These are my lesson plans for a writing unit on Realistic Fiction. The task was for my students to research Alaskan natives (Athabascans) and then write a fiction story about a character, which was an Alaskan native (which meant they had to put in some real facts about how Alaskan natives live). I used the story The Athabascans: Old Ways and New Ways by Ron Fridell, for the research, but your students can do the research with any books about Alaskan natives.
If your school uses ReadyGEN, this unit goes along well with the Grade 3, Unit 2 Module A in ReadyGEN. (My school does ReadyGEN for reading, but we develop our own writing units that match the task at the end of the unit.)
If your school does not use ReadyGEN, this unit goes along well with any unit on Alaska, Alaskan natives, or the story The Year of Miss Agnes.
All lessons are written in a mini-lesson format and the plans follow components of the Danielson Framework.
The outline for the unit is as follows (although I spent multiple days on some so there are some duplicate lesson plans):
1. gather notes about Athabascans
2. create story elements
3. continue to create story elements
4. plan the sequence of events
5. begin drafting
6. continue drafting
7. continue drafting with temporal words
8. add dialogue
9. add details to show a character’s response to a situation
10. continue to add details to show a character’s response to a situation
11. add details to show (not tell) a character’s traits
12. add a solution
14. edit for capitals and punctuation
15. edit for capitals and punctuation
All lesson plans include the following components: unit, lesson topic, objective (written in the “Today I will __ so that I can __. I’ll know I’ve got it when __.” format), Common Core Learning Standards, materials, vocabulary, motivation/connection, learning plan, higher order thinking questions, assessment, differentiation, closure, and reinforce and extend learning.
I differentiated this unit with graphic organizers of different complexities. I did not include these graphic organizers because I simply bought them off of another seller on Teacherspayteachers.com.
I included examples of my own story in these lesson plans. This product is completely editable to feel free to change the examples if you wish!
