In these fifteen individual lessons for your guided reading study of contemporary realistic fiction, you'll find all you need to help your students understand of how characters drive narratives. Although centered on everyday problems in school settings, these lessons could be used with any study of modern realistic fiction. Each lesson contains a list of materials, clear and comprehensive teaching directions, target excerpts and discussion/question prompts. Additionally, you'll find teaching visuals, student graphic organizers and possible student responses. This classroom study begins with a formative assessment and creation of the genre's definition and ends with identifying and using the main character's conflict to formulate a theme statement. The lessons are short, engaging, and versatile. Later lessons continue to use and expand concepts practiced in previous lessons.
