This is an example of an observation based assessment activity which requires 1 class period 40-50 mins in length.
Students are given a short answer activity sheet along with a content sheet describing and providing examples of a particular genre of reality television. Students are to read over the information sheet and discuss the genre and show examples listed. Students are then to take turns recording answer to each question based on their collective discussion.
I told each student who records to write their name beside each question they complete in order to track specific participation. This allows the teacher to focus on discussion content and general participation without having to make impromptu notes.
Students responded very well to this activity as most have viewed television fitting into these genres, however it is important to note that no prior exposure to these genres is necessary.
