This Reasoning with Fractions Sums and Differences Quiz aligns perfectly to Common Core State Standard 5.NF.2. This complex standard includes estimation, error analysis, and multi-step word problems all involving adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

The product includes two versions so that students who don't master the skill the first time get an opportunity to re-take it. Each quiz has 10 multiple choice questions.

Sample Questions:

1) Jackie has a flower garden. 3/4 of the garden is planted with tulips and 1/5 of the garden is planted with roses. The rest of Jackie’s garden is planted with daffodils. What fraction of Jackie’s garden is planted with daffodils?
a) 1/4 b) 1/20

c) 4/9 d) 19/20

2) Becca adds 3/5 and 2/3. She estimates that her sum will be less than one whole. Which of the following statements is true about Becca’s estimate?
a) Becca’s estimate is not reasonable because both fractions are greater than one half.
b) Becca’s estimate is not reasonable because both fractions are less than one half.
c) Becca’s estimate is reasonable because both fractions are greater than one half.
d) Becca’s estimate is reasonable because both fractions are less than half.

This quiz is designed for 5th grade but could be a challenge activity for 4th grade or used to spiral review for 6th or 7th grades.
