Students need lots of practice with concrete and representational models before any drilling takes place. The activities in this unit are designed to help your third grade students make connections and understand the meaning of multiplication.
This unit was developed after reading Jo Boaler's article called "Fluency
Teacher 2 Teachers made the flashcards for the basic multiplication facts with a focus on building conceptual understanding of multiplication concepts such as arrays, grouping, repeated addition, and the commutative and associative properties.
Use the large cards in whole group or small group. Choose specific cards to develop targeted concepts. Play matching games such as memory. Challenge students to find matches of all of the representations included in the set.
This unit also includes smaller cards to play a game we named "Grumpy Dog." This game is based on the well-known game "Old Maid."
A variety of game boards for the game Four in a Row are also included as well as a multiplication chart which can be used to check the answers during game play or to use as you discuss patterns within the multiplication table.
Targeted Standards 3.OA.C.7 and 3.OA.B.5
