This is a project that I created for my juniors in Algebraic Reasoning. We were going over percents, and they seemed to struggle with it a little. In this project, the student will need to create five different receipts with two sale items and a total of six items with descriptions. For the sale item, the student will need to show the regular price, the percentage off, and the sale price. The student will have to calculate the subtotal, the amount of tax at 8.25%, and the total. I also have them calculate a commission of 7.5% off of each sale. In addition to creating five receipts, I have the student creating a sales ad with ten items that includes their sale price, description, and picture.
You could also supply the students with magazines or catalogs for the students to get items and prices for the project instead of allowing the students to create their own items and prices.
I have included a simple rubric that I follow for grading.
